Happy Valentine's Day ! --- The Valentines, Virginia post-office takes up perhaps a quarter of 'Wright's' country store at a farmland crossroads near the North Carolina border. Every year, in the days leading up to February 14th, Postmistress Kathy Fajna says she hand-stamps an 'average of 15,000' valentines with the office's special stamp and postmark, 'most', she says with a smile, 'come in on the last four days'. Fajna wouldn't take a guess at how many there might be this year, but remembers one year the total reached 28,000. Red cut-out hearts are everywhere; there's a constant trickle of customers, some local, some driving in from out-of-town just to have their envelopes specially stamped with the unique marks as a gift for loved ones. In the back of the old store the owner Mrs Wright does unrelated paperwork, and remembers how crowded they were in 1995 when the U.S. Postal Service issued the 'Love' stamp at this post office. 'The store itelf' she says, 'is no longer really operating', and beyond the corner that the post-office takes up there's little merchandise other than collectibles gathered over the years by her husband, and some souvenirs that display the special 'Valentines, Virginia' hand-stamp. At the postal-desk, Fajna's hasn't paused, she's still taking in more and stamping more, and still smiling. Happy Valentine's Day.
